What is an Elder?
by Chris Haviland

An Elder is simply the term we apply to a retired or former leader of the Kindred, such as a former Godhi, Gydhja, or Lawspeaker. There are a multitude of reasons why an leader might pass on their post to another, but it happens to any kindred which survives long enough, eventually. In this busy world of ours, people move and change, and yes we all age, too. The position of Elder is a way of acknowledging the debt the kindred has to this man or woman, and the deep knowledge and experience such service invariably imparts to them. The current leader(s) of a kindred place much weight on the advice and input of the Elders. Oftimes, an Elder may assume an additional role within the kindred, such as the Lorewarden, which provides them with a more formalized place in the the structure of the kindred. The Elders are truly the foundation of the kindred, and a kindred which posesses a body of such men and woman has passed the test of time.
