The Origin

Our 1967 Chevelle 300 Custom Deluxe was built in Kansas. We purchased it from a guy by the name of Kelsey in Ogden, Utah in May of 1999. He had acquired the car from the original owner a while back with the intention of resoring it for one of his children. Partialy through the project he realized that he had too many other car projects, and needed to get rid of the one he had the least money in. Tom found the car in an ad on the Internet, and a few weeks later settled a deal with Kelsey. Our father towed the car from Ogden to Indianapolis with his new F-150 and tandem axle trailer after a visit to our other brother Nate in California.

300 Custom Deluxe

Though it's no DeSoto, our Chevelle is rare enough for our tastes. The 300 Custom Deluxe was the economy model of the Chevelle, and is somewhat lighter than an SS or Malibu. Our coupe weighs about 100 pounds less than a hardtop. Only about 1,900 of these economy cars shipped with the optional 283ci V8 engin in 1967. To compliment the 283 was a "three on the tree" manual transmission in front of a 10 bolt differential with 3.08 gears.

Body Parts

The body of the car is very solid, though the paint is faded and has a few small patches of surface rust. Before the car came to Indianapolis, we hired a friend of Kelsey's to install a new trunk pan, the only part of the car that we knew to have any serious rust problems. It turns out that the rear window frame could use a bit of welding too.

Functionality

Here are some pictures of the car with the first build of the engine in and running for the first time.
