Manual Steering

Our 300 Custom Deluxe, being the strippo model, came with a manual steering gearbox which had a ratio of approximately 17 and 1/8 turns lock to lock. Although we hadn't put much thought into messing with the steering, we changed our minds when a good deal presented itself.

Power Steering

Tom found a guy selling a complete power steering setup, pulleys and all, for a '67 Chevelle for a reasonable price. We took some advice from somebody and ended up with the power steering gearbox out of a '72, which has an even smaller lock to lock ratio than the '67 power steering gearbox. The pittman arm of the '72 gearbox was machined for a smaller stud than our Chevelle has. It took quite a bit of hunting, but we finally found a machine shop in town that would cut the tapered hole. We had to get a long style water pump to accomodate the new pulley system, but after two and a half bottles of power steering fluid (purchased one at a time) it works great.
