National Archives Film M237 #265 (third ship on the film)

New York, May 11, 1866

DISTRICT OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK

I, R.W. Grace Master of the (ss) England do solemnly, sincerely, and truly Declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board of the said Vessel at Lpool & Q'town from which port said Vessel has now arrived; and that on the said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of the said Passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who have died. So help me God. RWGrace Sworn to this 11,May 1866 before me (signature unreadable)

List or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the (ss) England whereof

R.W. Grace is Master, from Liverpool burthen 3304 tons.

Click page number below to view the names on the list.

I scanned the pages instead of trying to transcribe because of hard to read handwriting. I counted 1201 steerage (maybe I missed one) and 18 cabin. The last page has "Total 1202" written on it. Countries are listed as England, Ireland, and Alien. All have "The Country in which they intend to become Inhabitants" as United States. A few odd things, there are no checks in the died column. And I can't locate Henry & Margaret Wenner's names on the list. The book, "American Passenger Arrival Records" by Michael Tepper, says, "Liverpool...has no departure records...until 1890...". This may be the only official record available for this voyage.

If you are interested in a page I can e-mail you a larger graphic. If your family had passengers on the S.S. England at any time would you please share their experience by e-mailing me a paragraph or two about them.  joemilr@iquest.net
