Marie Wenner letter excerpt
Written April 27, 1926 to a niece Margaret Pommes Kirsch in Iowa the daughter of Margaret "Greti" Wenner Pommes Schmidt
"I do remember quite well, when Greti and brother Henry left our home to go to America, how they came to kiss us two youngest, Suzie who died in the convent a Franciscan nun and myself, before leaving and how our parents cried. Dear mother cried and cried in assembly. Every evening she turned towards the direction they had gone and she blessed them making the sign of the cross over that way and she prayed and cried. She did it as long as she lived. She just adored her children especially her Greti, the eldest and those who left her so far, far away never to return. Oh! You all who are born in America cannot understand the sadness those felt who left their native country and of those who were left behind." (The letter was signed) Your loving Aunt Mary
