The Indiana Core 40 Requirements:


In order to graduate from high school in Indiana, you must earn a minimum of 38 credits. The core 40 goes beyond this state minimum. In addition, your high school may have additional requirements for high school graduation. Is the student prepared for college ?

Main group:


Take 28 to 20 credits from this list.
One credit equals one semester or one half of a school year, except for physical education.

Language Arts

8 credits in Literature, Composition, and Speech

Mathematics

6-8 credits in Algebra I Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus

Science

6 credits in Laboratory Science from the following:
2 Biology, 2 Chemistry or Physics, and 2 additional credits from Chemistry, Physics, Earth/Space Science, Advanced Biology, Advanced Chemistry, or Advanced Physics

Social Studies

6 credits distributed as follows:
2 US History
1 US Government
1 Economics
1 World History and/or Geography
1 Additional course from above or other Social Studies area

Physical Education

1 credit (two semesters)

Health/Safety

1 credit (one semester)


Major group:

Choose 8 additional credits in courses from the list above or below.

Foreign Language

Arts

Take one or more years of Art, Music, or Drama

Computers

Computer applications, Computer programming

Career Area

At least 6 credits in a logical sequence from a technical career area.


Supplimental


Choose 2 to 4 more credits from any course at your school.

This list is a well-balanced high school program of studies recommended by the Indiana Association of College Admission Counselors.

College Preparatory English
Four years including Grammar, Literature, and Composition

College Preparatory Mathematics
Three or four years including Algebra, Geometry, and Advanced Algebra.

Laboratory Science
Two or three years of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Foreign Language
Two years of any Foreign Language.

Social Sciences (non-survey courses)
Two years of American History, European History, Government, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, or other.

Introductory Courses
Experience with Music and Art.

Skills Courses
Experience with Typing, Industrial Technology, and Basic Computing.
