Charles King's family, like the Penningtons, came to South Carolina from Virginia. He petitioned for land near the Santee River as a new settler in South Carolina on 1 Apr 1754. Isaac Pennington petitioned for land on the same day. Charles King's connection to Isaac Pennington is proven by Isaac's will, dated 3 Mar 1760, Berkeley County, South Carolina. The will bequeaths 350 acres to his oldest daughter Charity, the land "being the place where her husband Charles King now inhabits". In 1762, Charles King was named as a son-in-law in the will of Isaac Pennington's wife Mary.
Charles King is found in numerous South Carolina land records, many of which list him as "Captain Charles King". Charles King made his will 21 Jan 1789, proved 2 Mar 1789, Newberry County, South Carolina He names children Jacob, Pennington, Lydia Lindsey, Mary Stark, Ruth Stark, Charity Gordon, Rebecca, and Keziah. Witnesses were Micajah Bennett, William Ragland and Samuel Ragland. Executors were Jacob King, son-in-law Jeremiah Stark, and Samuel Cannon (friend).
An excellent summary on Charles King is found in "James Stark of Stafford County Virginia and His Descendants", compiled by Mary Kathryn Harris and Mary Iva Jean Jorgensen (privately printed, Fort Worth, Texas, 1985). Note that Isaac Pennington's brother Jacob also had a daughter named Charity, who married Randolph Casey.
