Naomi Pennington Power

The photo, taken at Locust Grove Cemetery in Nashville, Washington County, Illinois shows the grave marker of Naomi Power who died in 1849. This is only tombstone I am aware of for a grandchild of Abraham Pennington, progenitor of Group 8 (please inform me if you are aware of others!). Note: Thanks to Helen Call, a researcher of the Power line, for supplying me with the photo!

How is it known that Naomi is a granddaughter of Abraham? To begin with, Jacob Pennington, son of Abraham, had a daughter Naomi born between the writing of his will was written in 1762 and his death around 1774 (see Jacob Pennington's page for details). Based on the dates given on the tombstone, Naomi Power's date of birth was around January 2, 1772, which fits in the 1762-1774 window required for Jacob's daughter Naomi.

Mrs. W. Dittman, a descendant of Naomi Power's son Pennington Power (1794-1854) was well acquainted with this line and with the Pennington Power homeplace in Clinton Co., IL where Pennington Power died and was buried. Her information is summarized in an article she submitted to Pennington Pedigrees in 1970 (PP 2-2, pages 42-44). Among other things, Mrs.Dittman had access to Pennington Power's family bible in which it was written that his parents were John Power of South Carolina, Naomi Power, also of South Carolina.

So, to summarize, Naomi Power was born in the right place and at the right time to be the same person as Jacob Pennington's daughter Naomi. Further, she named one of her sons "Pennington". Finally, I would add that several Laurens and Spartanburgh Co., SC deeds and estate records in the 1794-1800 time frame mention dealings or transactions between Penningtons (John or Jacob) and Powers (including John Powers, who may be Naomi's husband). Thus, I am 99% sure of this connection.

Power(s) children who can be connected with a reasonable level of certainty to John and Naomi Power include Mary Power (married Williston Lane, ancestor of Helen Call who supplied the photograph), Nathaniel Power, and Holloway Power (details under construction).

Holloway Power is found in several Ripley and Butler Co., MO records. For instance:

1850 Ripley Co., MO census, District 77, reel no. 412, page 419B, line 19: POWERS, Holoway 52 M farming 150 SC, Terrisse 45 F TN, Washington 17 M farming MO, Neoma 14 F MO, Elizabeth 10 F MO, Mary 6 F MO.
